Located on Hengill volcano in the South of Iceland, Hellisheidarvirkjun (or Hellisheiði) heat and power plant (CHP) constitutes the largest power station in Iceland and the second largest geothermal power station in the world. The geothermal power plant was created to provide electricity to the city of Reykjavik to supply an increasing demand.
The Theistareykir (Þeistareykir) geothermal power station is being developed by Þeistareykir, a subsidiary of the National Power Company of Iceland (Landsvirkjun), in north-east Iceland. Phase one of the two-phased 90MW (2 x 45MW) power project is scheduled to start operations in October 2017.
S emission from their power plants. Reykjavík Energy has been working on solution to lower gas emission from its power plants since commissioning of hot water production in Nesjavellir power plant in 1990. Since commission-ing of Hellisheiði Power Plant in 2006 that was followed by an increase in H 2 S concentration in nearby town and communities
Benefits of Geothermal Energy Plant Iceland. The advantages of the Geothermal Energy Plant Iceland are comprehensive and impactful: Renewable and Sustainable: Geothermal energy is both renewable and sustainable, producing only a fraction of the emissions compared to fossil fuels, thus offering a much cleaner alternative.; Reliability and Scalability: Geothermal

The power station is owned and operated by ON Power. Plans for utilizing the Nesjavellir area for geothermal power and water heating began in 1947, when boreholes were drilled to evaluate the area''s potential for power generation. Research continued from 1965 to 1986. In 1987, construction of the plant began, and the cornerstone was laid in May

The Krafla Power Station is a geothermal power plant operated by Landsvirkjun. Located in the northeast of Iceland, the Power Station was built in the crater of the Krafla volcano. It was first brought online in 1978. Due to need of modernization, the plant was refurbished, and a 2nd unit was installed in 1997.

Iceland''s Hellisheidi geothermal power plant is one of the world''s ten biggest geothermal power plants. It is a flash steam combined heat and power (CHP) plant that generates 303MW of electricity and 400MW of thermal energy.
Landsvirkjun started international activities in 2003 with projects in Albania and in Greenland. All overseas activities were brought under the auspices of Landsvirkjun Power in 2008 and include various specialized consulting services and engineering work on hydropower, geothermal, wind and transmission projects.
With these impressive changes, Krafla power station now contributes to grid stability in Iceland and performs more efficiently. Therefore, it is considered one of the best turbines currently in operation in the country.
Landsvirkjun chose to modernize the electrical equipment and turbine control system to make the power station state-of-the-art. To optimize the power output, the turbine control system needed be upgraded and a voltage regulator was required to secure critical electrical components.
Geothermal energy is generated with hot water stemming from underground reservoirs, which makes this process extremely environmentally friendly. Generating 500 Gwh/y and with an installed capacity of 60 MW, Krafla Power Station is crucial for Iceland’s energy supply.
